Safe sleep checks

  • Always place your child on their back to sleep.
  • Check for overheating by feeling the chest or back of neck. Remove a layer if hot or sweaty.
  • Do not put a hat on your baby indoors or for sleep — babies cool down through their head, and a hat can cause overheating.
  • Do not use a sleeping bag with a cot duvet or loose blanket.
  • These are general guides only — every child is different.
  • Ideal room temperature for sleep is 16–20°C.
  • Stop using a sleeping bag if damaged or if your child can climb out of the cot.
